After a nice holiday with brothers and nephews playing Catan and other games, I was thinking of upcoming Christmas ideas.
What is the better expansion? Seafarers or Knights/Castles.
the catalogue in the box is a little confusing as to what each expansion does. Do they both allow 5-6 players AND give you new things to do with the game or is there an expansion to regular rules AND a seperate one to add 5-6 players?
How does the Space game compare? _________________

I have played seafarers its inline with the main game. I understand that the knights one is significantly different. _________________ It's about the game, not gamesmanship.
Gamesmanship is the use of dubious (although not technically illegal) methods to win a game, such as golf or snooker. "Pushing the rules to the limit without getting caught, using whatever dubious methods possible to achieve the desired end." (Lumpkin, Stoll and Beller, 1994:92). As opposed to sportsmanship, it may be inferred that the term derives from playing for the game (to win at any cost) as opposed to playing for sport. |

Any idea if you can just use the 5-6 player expansion size map without the extra rules or do the extra rules enhance a larger game? _________________

I don't really know. I have the impression that they're fixed at the smaller numbers, but not actually sure. _________________ It's about the game, not gamesmanship.

| I think there's an expansion that simply ups the player size to 5-6, if you want to allow for more people without adding more rules. Aside from that, Seafarers and Knights and Cities are both fun if you're looking for Settlers with a twist. IMO, Seafarers is better for some random fun, Knights and Cities is better if you want a slightly more complex game. |

IIRC, I saw a player expansion for the add-ons.
e.g. you buy the knights expansion, and then you buy the expansion for knights that lest you do extra players. _________________ It's about the game, not gamesmanship.

yep got it all figured out. big box expansion lets you play the new rules with the basic set. small box expansion lets you add on 2 players to the big box expansion. so every expansion requires main box, every little box requires the big box of same color.
Still fun if someone wants to play sometime. I only have the basic and 2player expansion. played the seafarers and its fun too. _________________

Maybe we could bring that to the slacker game day. I've got a copy of the basic set. _________________ It's about the game, not gamesmanship.
